When does the office cover moving costs?
If you receive Bürgergeld, the Jobcenter can cover the costs of your move – for basic security or social assistance, the social welfare office is responsible. The requirement is that the move is necessary. Recognized reasons include: the office asks you to move because the rent is unreasonably high, you start a job in another city, health reasons, a growing family, or a separation.
The most important rule: apply for cost coverage BEFORE you sign the new rental contract. You need the office's prior approval (Zusicherung) – first for the new flat (reasonableness of the rent), then for the moving costs. Without prior approval, the office generally won't pay. The office usually requires quotes from moving companies – often three for comparison.
As a rule, the office expects you to do as much as possible yourself – for example with a rental van and private helpers. A moving company is covered when a do-it-yourself move is not reasonable for you: for example due to age, illness, pregnancy, disability, or as a single parent without help.
