What Determines the Moving Costs?

The cost of a move depends on many factors – which is why flat-rate prices are rarely honest. We rely on a fair fixed price after a free survey. Here you can see what affects the price so you can plan your budget realistically.

Tip: Get a Fixed-Price Quote

At Motus Umzüge, you receive a binding fixed-price quote after a free survey – on-site or via WhatsApp video. This way you know exactly what your move will cost in advance. No hidden costs, no surprises.

These Factors Affect the Price

  • Apartment size and amount of household goods
  • Floor level and elevator – no elevator means more effort
  • Distance between old and new apartment
  • Additional services: packing, furniture assembly, no-parking zone
  • Timing: end of month and summer are often more expensive
  • Heavy or bulky items (piano, safe)

Additional Costs Often Forgotten

  • Renovating the old apartment (painting, filling holes)
  • Double rent during the transition period
  • Security deposit for the new apartment
  • Mail forwarding with the post office (approx. 30 €)
  • Re-registration and new IDs
  • New curtains, lamps, or furnishings

Preparation and Planning

Finding the Right Moving Company

Choosing the right moving company is the most important decision for your move. Pay attention to these points:

  • Free survey: Reputable companies do not estimate over the phone – they take a look, on-site or by video.
  • Fixed-price quote: Avoid hourly billing – it almost always ends up more expensive than expected.
  • Insurance coverage: Ask about transport insurance and the liability amount.
  • Read reviews: Google reviews and recommendations from people you know give a good impression.
  • No upfront payment: Never pay the full amount in advance.

Packing the Right Way

Good packing protects your belongings and saves valuable time on moving day.

  • Heavy items on the bottom: Books and heavy items go in small boxes, light items in large ones.
  • Wrap glass individually: Each glass and plate is individually wrapped in packing paper.
  • Fill empty spaces: Stuff empty spaces in the box with paper so nothing shifts.
  • Label: Write the contents and destination room on each side of the box.
  • Not too heavy: A box should weigh no more than 20–25 kg – you still need to be able to carry it.
  • Room by room: Pack systematically, one room at a time.

No-Parking Zone – When Do I Need One?

A no-parking zone secures a parking spot right at your door – for the moving truck and furniture lift. This saves walking distance and therefore time and money, especially in the narrow streets of Regensburg's old town.

  • Must be applied for at least 2–3 weeks in advance
  • Cost: approx. 50–150 € depending on city and duration
  • At Motus Umzüge, we are happy to handle the application for you
  • Recommended for: city moves, narrow streets, upper floors

On Moving Day

The big day is here. With the right preparation, everything will go smoothly – and we lend a strong hand.

Morning Before the Move

During the Move

  • Stay available: Be on site and answer questions from our team.
  • Direct: Show us which box goes to which room.
  • Document: Photograph the condition of the old apartment before the handover.
  • Children and pets: Best to leave them with friends or family.

Apartment Handover

  • Walk through all rooms together with the landlord
  • Create a handover report and have both parties sign it
  • Hand over all keys and get a receipt
  • Include meter readings in the report

Deducting Moving Costs from Taxes

Under certain conditions, you can claim moving costs on your taxes:

  • Job-related move: Transport costs, agent fees, and the moving allowance are deductible as business expenses.
  • Private move: Moving costs can be partially deducted as household-related services (max. 20% up to 4,000 €).
  • Important: Keep all invoices and receipts carefully!

The 10 Most Common Moving Mistakes

From experience, we know which mistakes keep happening. Avoid these:

1

Starting too late

Start planning at least 8 weeks in advance. Good moving companies are often booked up weeks ahead.

2

Choosing the cheapest offer

Extremely cheap offers often result in hidden costs, damages, or no-shows. Look for fixed prices and reviews.

3

Not decluttering

Every extra box costs money. Use the move as an opportunity to get rid of things you no longer need.

4

No no-parking zone

Without a reserved parking spot, we often have to walk hundreds of metres. This costs time and therefore money.

5

Packing incorrectly

Boxes that are too heavy, unlabelled, or with unfilled gaps lead to chaos and damage.

6

Not defrosting the fridge

An undefrosted fridge drips in the moving truck and can damage other items. Defrost at least 24 hours in advance.

7

Not securing the washing machine

The drum must be secured with transit bolts. Without them, the appliance can be irreparably damaged during transport.

8

Not taking photos

Photograph the condition of the old apartment before handover and the meter readings. This protects against false claims.

9

Forgetting insurance

Check whether your household insurance covers transport. Reputable moving companies have their own transport insurance.

10

Forgetting to re-register

You must re-register at the residents' registration office within 2 weeks. Failure to do so can result in a fine.

Saving Money on Your Move

A move does not have to break the bank. With these tips you can reduce costs:

Choose your timing wisely

Moves in the middle of the month and outside the summer months (July–September) are often cheaper. Weekdays are usually less expensive than Saturdays.

Declutter beforehand

The less that needs to be transported, the cheaper the move. Sell well-preserved furniture and items online or donate them.

Pack yourself

If you have time, pack yourself. This saves the cost of a packing service. However, make sure to pack properly to avoid damage.

Collect free boxes

Supermarkets, bookshops, and electronics stores often give away boxes for free. Just ask. Make sure they are sturdy enough.

Deduct moving costs

Job-related moves can be claimed on your taxes. Private moving costs can also be partially deducted as household-related services.

Fixed-price quote instead of hourly billing

Hourly billing almost always ends up more expensive than expected. Insist on a binding fixed price after a survey – just like with us.

Special Moving Situations

Moving with Children

For children, a move means losing their familiar surroundings. Here is how to make it easier:

  • Involve children early and explain why you are moving
  • Explore the new apartment/area together beforehand
  • Have them stay with friends or family on moving day
  • Set up the children's room first – a familiar retreat
  • Enable contact with old friends

Moving with Pets

Pets are sensitive to changes. Keep in mind:

  • Keep dogs/cats in a quiet, empty room or with friends on moving day
  • Have familiar items (blanket, toys) within reach
  • Find a vet at the new location in advance
  • Register your dog with the new municipality

Moving Abroad

An international move brings additional challenges:

  • Check customs regulations of the destination country
  • Create an inventory list for customs
  • Deregister at the residents' registration office
  • Clarify health insurance and tax obligations
  • Plan for a longer lead time (min. 3 months)
